How to Spot a Roofing Scam

Of the many roofing concerns in our industry, the out-of-town storm chasers are the most publicized, and people all across the Bluegrass fall victim to them.

What is a Storm Chaser?

Storm chasers are out-of-town roofing companies that prey on homeowners after a hail or wind storm. They show up in affected neighborhoods, handing out flyers or knocking on doors uninvited, offering free inspections. These companies know how to work with insurance companies to get the minimum payment needed to install a cheap roof. Unfortunately, they often cut corners, leaving other storm damage unaddressed and your roof improperly repaired.

What can happen if I hire one?

As a result of the corners they cut, homeowners are left with poorly installed roofs that might only last 5 to 7 years. By the time problems arise, these companies have disappeared, leaving no way to hold them accountable. At Empire Restoration, we’ve seen far too many Kentuckians fall victim to these scams, and we’re committed to helping the Bluegrass avoid these situations with honest, high-quality service.

How can you tell if a roofing company is a scam?

Be cautious if a roofing company:

  • Knocks on doors or pushes you to sign a work order immediately.
  • Sends unsolicited mail or leaves flyers taped to your mailbox.
  • Uses high-pressure sales tactics.
  • Promises a "free roof" or offers to waive your deductible (this is insurance fraud).
  • Has out-of-state license plates or IDs (always ask to verify their identity).
  • Can’t provide recent, local references from before the storm.
  • Is unlisted, has bad reviews, or has complaints with the Better Business Bureau.
  • Frequently changes their company name to avoid their past scams.

  • Stay vigilant, ask questions, and choose a trusted local company like Empire Restoration to ensure your roof is repaired the right way!
